The
Maldives Around 1190 coral islands, consisting of 26 atoll
formations, are scattered across the equator in the middle of the Indian
Ocean, about 500km from the southern tips of both Sri Lanka &
India covering
an area of 90,000 Square Kilometers. The gem like islands of the Maldives depicts the rare
vision of a tropical paradise. Palm fringed islands with sparkling white
beaches, turquoise lagoons, clear warm waters and coral reefs teeming
with abundant varieties of marine flora and fauna, continue to fascinate
visitors, as it has fascinated others in the past, for thousands of
years. The unique islands provide visitors with one of the breathtaking views of underwater life in the world. Formed above peaks emerging from the depths of the ocean, upon layers of both living and dead coral, and remnants of other marine life, the islands generally covered with dense tropical vegetation. Coconut palms towering above dense shrubs and hardy plants protecting the shores from erosion are natural features in most islands. The smaller islands and sand banks under formation are also wonders in themselves. These islands together embody living entitles in various stages of formation, as independent elements in an ecology, in a food chain where birds, fish, and other marine life coexist, with humans at its apex as caretakers for centuries. Top Climate - The summer never ends in the Maldives.
Although it is warm through out the year there are slight variations in
the temperature during certain periods determined by the monsoons.
However, being on the equator, the monsoons are mild and not as defined
as in the neighboring countries. Of the two monsoons, the southwest
monsoon from May to October brings some rain and wind. The northeast
monsoon, from November to April, is the dry season with very little
wind. Geography – The Maldives is 80 -120 Kilometers wide and out of the 1190 islands, only 201 islands are inhabited by local people, and 87 islands are developed exclusively as tourist resorts, while the rest of the islands are uninhabited. Top
